How Often Should You Actually Dry Clean a Suit?
Less often than you think, and over-cleaning wears a suit out faster than wearing it does. Here's a practical schedule.
MODA Cleaners

The honest answer is: less often than most people do.
A suit worn roughly once a week is fine going four or five wears between cleans. Worn daily, every two to three weeks. The instinct to clean after every outing comes from treating a suit like a shirt, and it’s the fastest way to wear one out.
Why over-cleaning is the bigger risk
Every clean is mildly abrasive. Fibres are agitated, pressed, and handled. Do that weekly to a wool suit and you’ll see the shine on the elbows and seat long before the fabric was ever going to give up on its own.
Wearing a suit doesn’t damage it much. Cleaning it does, a little, each time.
What to do between cleans
Most of what makes a suit feel stale isn’t dirt.
- Hang it properly. A wide wooden hanger, not a wire one, and give it a day off between wears so the fibres recover.
- Brush it down. A soft clothes brush after each wear takes off the surface dust that dulls the colour.
- Air it out. An open window for a few hours does more for odour than a clean does.
- Spot-treat quickly. Blot, don’t rub, and get it to us while it’s fresh. A same-week stain is a very different job from a three-month-old one.
When to bring it in regardless
- There’s a visible stain, whatever the wear count.
- It’s been stored for a season and is going back into rotation.
- It smells of smoke, food, or damp.
- You’re putting it away for the summer. Store it clean. Moths are drawn to the traces we leave behind, not the wool itself.
One thing people get wrong
Always clean the whole suit together, jacket and trousers, even if only the trousers look worn. Cleaning changes colour very slightly over time. Clean one half repeatedly and eventually you have two pieces that no longer quite match.
