Wedding Dress Preservation: What Happens After the Big Day

The stains you can't see are the ones that ruin a gown. Here's what preservation involves and why sooner genuinely matters.

The dress comes off, goes back in the bag it arrived in, and gets put in a wardrobe. That’s what happens to most wedding dresses, and it’s why so many come out ten years later with brown patches nobody remembers causing.

The stains you can’t see

Champagne, white wine, lemonade, and anything sugary go on clear and stay invisible for months. Then they oxidise. By the time you can see the mark, the sugar has already caramelised into the fibres and it is genuinely difficult to remove.

Perspiration does the same thing more slowly, usually around the underarms and the waist seam.

This is the single reason we say bring it in soon. Not to hurry you: a gown cleaned within a few weeks is straightforward, and the same gown cleaned two years later may not fully recover.

What cleaning involves

A wedding gown isn’t run through a cycle. Ours are cleaned by hand.

Beading, appliqué, and tulle are each treated according to what they’re made of, because they rarely all share a fibre. The hem, which has typically spent an evening collecting whatever was on the floor, gets worked separately. Then the gown is pressed and detailed by hand.

What preservation actually is

Preservation is the part people don’t picture, and it’s the part that determines whether the dress survives.

The gown is folded with acid-free tissue at every fold, then boxed in an acid-free box. Ordinary cardboard is acidic; over years it yellows whatever it touches. A plastic garment bag is worse: it traps moisture against the fabric and encourages mildew.

The bust is usually supported so the shape holds, and the box is sealed against light and dust.

Storing it afterwards

  • A wardrobe or under a bed, not an attic or a garage. Temperature swings are the enemy.
  • Flat, not upright.
  • Out of direct light.
  • If you want to look at it, do, just wash your hands first. Skin oils mark silk.

If it’s already been sitting a while

Bring it anyway. Older marks are harder, not always impossible, and we’ll tell you honestly what we think we can get out before we start.
